Private Nonprofits, Including Houses of Worship, Eligible for Disaster Assistance HONOLULU – Private non-profit organizations, including houses of worship, may be eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program. This program is available for organizations in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi County and Maui County to help recover from damage caused by Kona Low flooding that occurred March 10–24, 2026. Funding from FEMA’s PA program can be used to reimburse state and local governments and certain nonprofits for the cost of emergency protective measures, debris removal and restoring disaster-damaged roads, bridges and public facilities. The deadline to file a Request for Public Assistance in the City and County of Honolulu, as well as Hawaiʻi and Maui counties is May 7, 2026. Private nonprofits that provide critical services and/or essential social services such as hospitals and other medical treatment facilities and utilities senior citizen and community centers, and houses of worship that sustained damages should apply. Other examples of critical services and essential social services include water, sewer and electrical systems; private schools that provide elementary or secondary education or institutions of higher education, custodial and day care services, disability residential services, assisted living and low-income housing, homeless shelters and rehabilitation services and performing and community arts centers. All applicants are encouraged to file a Request for Public Assistance (RPA) as soon as possible by visiting ready.hawaii.gov/konalow.
